Collector pays big for rare VW microbus
An American car collector outbid a crowd of enthusiasts for this 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 23-window Samba microbus, paying an astonishing US$217,800 (NZ$258,393) at a recent Barret-Jackson car auction.
The 23-window variant is the rarest and most desirable of Samba buses, because it has two extra sections of curved roof glass, compared with the more common 21-window models.

When I’d had him a year I stripped him down to bare metal as I wanted to see what he was like in the nude ! I was very pleased to find that all of his panels were very straight and the bottom 12inches had been replaced. We then had a full respray done . Unfortunately the respray wasn’t great but we could not afford to have it redone. It is ok, but if you want it pristine you will have to look at having another respray in the future.
As you can see from the pictures Basil is a very pretty looking bus and with a little know how he will be stunning. The picture with the roof rack an Bull horns was taken in March but then he had a casual encounter with a post as the last few pictures show. I have patched him up and found some paint left over from the respray and blown over the area of the rear arch and sliding door.
I have been into VDubs for over 15 years now and have had Bays, Beetles, Golfs Passats and Polos. I have to sell Basil as my wife has had an operation and will no longer be able to drive him and in the current climate I can’t afford to keep him just for me. I am looking for a pre 69 Beetle for me to keep as a play thing so if you have one to part ex with me give me a shout.
