S first performance, Richard Fiske displayed some of the flaws typical of greenish stage actors: He sometimes spoke so quietly I couldnt hear him, and he couldnt disguise the handful of lines he flubbed. Neither shortcoming distracted me, because he had a gravitas that made his role in the play — that of a senior military officer overseeing the selection of an astronaut for a mission that will entail living for decades in total isolation — fit him like a spacesuit. (Okay, the innermost layer of a space suit.)Theres a reason the 64-year-old Fiske was so convincing: He served in the United States Navy for 28 years, about ten times as long as hes been an actor. Prior to his retirement from military service in 1997, Fiske was a diver and engineering officer whose missions included ship repair and deep-ocean search and recovery. His various details included a 1981-4 stint in Naples, Italy as the salvage officer for the Navys Sixth Fleet. From 1986 through 1990, he was deputy commander of the Naval ship repair facility at Yokosuka, Japan. He did a little amateur theater in on-base productions during that detail, appearing as Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (also by Crump) being voted Best Drama at last years Capital Fringe Festival. He praises his castmates warmly, especially Jonathan Colby , who plays an astronaut under his command.
He has the patience of Job, Fiske says. He worked with me on eye contact and building stakes and making it matter.
Fiske plans to keep acting. Therere always roles out there for a man of a certain age. Its much easier to be an old guy than to be a 20-year-old girl, Fiske says. You see the same faces showing up at auditions. And it feeds Fiske’s appetite for new challenges.
I went to law school when I was 56, he says. I was older than the dean. I had professors who were younger than my kids. It was wonderfully liberating: I didnt have a stake in how well I did. I was just there to learn.
Did his younger classmates benefit from his cool military demeanor when they felt stressed out?
I would tell them, Youre warm, youre dry, youre not getting shot at. Whats the problem?

Ever wonder what type of equipment commercial divers use? Find out when Fred Barthes of the Northeast Diving Equipment Group joins us to give a presentation on Hardhat Diving with surface supplied air. The presentation will include a full set of commercial dive gear (Hard Hat helmet), as well as various other pieces of equipment used in commercial diving. There will also be a demonstration on how a diver suits up in the hard hat and suit using a volunteer from those in attendance. THE FIRST “OFFICIAL” FUNCTION of what is today the Northeast Diving Equipment Group was the first Working Equipment Rally on the Labor Day Weekend of 1993. The beginning of the group, however, dates back to 1987 at Lakeland Divers scuba shop in East Hanover, New Jersey. Lakeland’s general manager, David Sutton, was a trained and experienced commercial diver. When Dave found a group of local scuba divers interested in diving commercial gear, he purchased a complete Mk V hardhat rig and began offering a series of “recreational hardhat diving” courses through the Lakeland Divers shop. The courses were equipment familiarization only and offered no formal certification. With the success of the Mk V, Dave expanded the courses to include a variety of lightweight commercial surface-supplied gear. The courses were advertised nationally and brought in students from all across the country. The NEDEG’s first organized activity was the “Working Equipment Rally” at Willow Springs Quarry Park in Pennsylvania over the 1993 Labor Day Weekend. The Rally was actually just a slightly expanded version of the “quarry dives” the group had been doing a couple of times a year since the late 1980s. A number of working commercial and military divers have visited the Rallies and observed the equipment and safety techniques. The group has received high marks for “professionalism” from these visiting divers while maintaining a pleasant social atmosphere on the dive site.
