As a testament to its commitment to health care quality, the Medical School has established a network of quality leaders in each clinical department. These vice chairs for quality of care, or chief quality officers, will assess and improve quality of care within their departments and work cooperatively on quality initiatives with a broad impact across our clinical practice.

In preparation for this new responsibility, each vice chair will complete the UT-Memorial Hermann Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Course and a portion of the Clinical Research curriculum. They will receive ongoing guidance and assistance from Associate Dean for Healthcare Quality Dr. Eric Thomas and Vice Dean for Clinical Research and Healthcare Quality Dr. Jon Tyson , and their projects will be rigorously assessed both within their departments and by the school’s administrative leadership. These efforts have the full support of our partners at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center and also will be integrated in hospital operations.

The vice chairs have been appointed by their department chair with the agreement of Dean Giuseppe Colasurdo , Drs. Thomas and Tyson, and the leadership of our clinical partners at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Additional leadership for this endeavor will be provided from the Dean’s Office through the appointment of three new assistant deans for healthcare quality: Dr. Bela Patel (adult), Dr. Eric Eichenwald (children’s), and Dr. Sean Blackwell (perinatal and women’s).

“I am proud to say that this new model of leadership will be presented by Dr. Bela Patel, Dr. Jeffrey Katz , and Dr. Eric Thomas at the national AAMC meeting this coming June,” Dean Colasurdo said. “We are the only institution asked by the AAMC to present on this topic, which is an honor, an endorsement of the work we have done thus far, and a challenge to continue on this path of innovation.

“We encourage you to lend your support and knowledge to these individuals and this project, and to help us create an environment where healthcare quality is championed.”

Children’s Learning Institute (CLI) founder and director Dr. Susan Landry recently received two accolades, including the Distinguished Professional Woman Award by The Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
