Another small business is a victim of a slow economy

Louisville, KY (WDRB) -- It's a place filled with color and imagination. It's been almost eleven years since John Diebold opened Aardvark Art Glass on Preston Highway, across from Audubon Park.

An art graduate from U of L, it was always his dream to have his own shop and studio to hand craft custom designed stained glass.

For awhile business was good and things were going well. "We were successful.  We developed a reputation, people knew us, they liked us," says Diebold.

But business started going south about 2008 when the housing market hit the skids, and it never has recovered. So John was forced to put up the going out of business sign.

"Stained glass is tied to the housing market like so many other occupations," says Diebold. He says many of his customers stopped spending money on luxury items like stained glass. He goes on to say, "Everything kind of fell apart the past three or four years.  It has gotten really slow.  Unfortunately, we are another victim of that slow economy."

Diebold says it's difficult to give up his business which he is so passionate about, but realizes its time for a reality check. "Just because it is a passion and you enjoy doing it," he says, "doesn't put the food on the table, it doesn't pay your mortgage, it doesn't pay your bills."

In the meantime there are bargains for customers. "At this stage we are doing twenty-five percent or better on discount prices," he says.

Diebold plans to look for a job in warehousing and will continue his passion, though on a limited basis. "I will probably continue to do this on the side, dabble a bit in my basement," he says.
