Restaurant critic review: Menu at Vero Beach eatery a bit too diverse
Despite its casual menu and wood-burning stove, there's a sophisticated feel to Joey's, the dramatic looking restaurant and late-night dance club on Indian River Boulevard.
Boulevard is the operative word here. With its high ceilings and high-backed booths, Joey's could be a stand-in for a smart, stylish Parisian bistro. Velvety, deep red chairs at large circular tables add to the chic quotient: Joey's is one of our swankiest joints.
But it's disjointed, too, with a menu as vast as those ceilings.
Cheese fries ($6) vie with a hearty Italian meat antipasto ($12 for two) on the appetizer menu. There also are chicken wings ($9) and shrimp ($6) with a vaguely Asian dipping sauce.
The globe trotting fare reminded me of a quickie grand tour of Europe, like the one in that old romantic comedy, "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium." If it's Joey's, this must be Sicily or Mexico or America or France — all at one table.
The result is a blur of food, a whirlwind of tastes that confuse the palate rather than enrich it.
The standout of the evening were prime rib sliders, a messy, delicious appetizer ($8). Thinly shaved beef was piled high and served on two little buns with grilled onions, garlic, dripping cheddar and au jus for dipping.
Pizzas ($9 for 12 inches) are great, too — a hybrid of gourmet and standard parlor fare, with a slightly chewy crust.
But linguine with homemade sausage ($17) suffered from a lack of sauce.
Not the case with a moist banana bread pudding ($6). Humble and comforting, it is served for dessert in various forms across globe. That's an especially good thing here.
But let's face it: you can't be all things to all people, let alone to all their stomachs.
I happen to really like a diverse menu. Most of the restaurants in the area have the same food all the time and that is positively boring. I look at a restaurant for good food not the junk like sliders and cheese fries which you can get anywhere especially in the chain restaurants which are not very good. I never go by Diana Foote's reviews anyway because she is typical when it comes to food, nothing out of the ordinary.
