Collingwood declares coach Mick Malthouse off limits

Having ruthlessly moved on Dean Bailey last night, the Demons will quickly draw up a coaching hit-list.

The problem for Melbourne is that while there are plenty of assistant coaches keen for a chance, few experienced types are available.

Malthouse would head the wanted list given his pedigree and known admiration of Melbourne's potential.

But he has categorically denied he will be at another club next year and president Eddie McGuire said yesterday the club would sue to keep him there if needed.

Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade fits the bill on numerous levels, and could well be available.

The Demons would have known, with Neil Craig already sacked by Adelaide, that hanging on to Bailey for five weeks would limit their options.

Melbourne legend Garry Lyon will come under pressure to throw his hat in the ring, but last year said he would never coach.

Melbourne's assistant coaches are seen as extreme long-shots to win the full-time position next year.

Todd Viney is the best-connected coach at the club, but neither of Josh Mahoney or Scott West are seen as ready and Brad Gotch and Mark Williams would be unlikely to be considered.

From there, the likes of former North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley and former Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams would be options as veteran coaches.

Former Melbourne star David Schwarz yesterday plumbed for an experienced coach to replace Bailey.

"My theory is about experience. Since Norm Smith, since 1964, we have had one experienced coach and that's Ron Barassi, who is an ex-player," he said. "Maybe it's time to get someone in with a bit of grunt and experience."

Of the AFL's assistant coaches, Collingwood's Mark Neeld, Geelong's Brenton Sanderson, Essendon's Brendan McCarthy and West Coast's Scott Burns would be considered.

McGuire was emphatic Malthouse yesterday was going nowhere.

"As I drove in today, I was listening on the radio about how clubs were going to go after Mick Malthouse and Melbourne this and Melbourne that and all the rest of it," McGuire said.

"Let me just say it once - Mick Malthouse is contracted to the Collingwood Football Club and we're an $85 million business these days, we're not mucking around.
