Tufton's scrap metal ban gets big support from online readers
THE ban by Industry, Investment and Commerce Minister Dr Christopher Tufton captured the imagination of Observer online readers who were unsparing in their comments on our editorial, some of which we share with you:
Kool: Those who don't think the scrap metal trade should be banned either don't live in JA or have never fallen victim these vultures. Please stay in your nice cozy homes in foreign where water and electricity are in abundance. But imagine the pipes that run water to our community stolen. We were left without water. Our children had to walk a mile to river to get water or to bathe until the NWC came out to fix it. Not easy when you get home at night and want to hold a fresh.
Howie J: Scrap metal is shipped overseas either by dumping it directly into the hull of a ship or stuffing it into a container. All containers have ID numbers. When a shipper orders a container from a local shipping agent, he has to give customs some information about the type of cargo. Scrap metals travel along the road in open top trucks to the scrap yard. Now how difficult can all of this be to solve? No wonder all over the world where black people reside there is so much poverty and crimes, because we are a people with comatose brains.

If the industry was properly regulated so that every bit of scrap metal can be traced back to its origin, then illegality in the trade would diminish as there would be no demand for scrap metal from unlicensed and unscrupulous characters.
