Cable Tray  is available in variation based on the environmental and weather conditions for which it is used. Either 300 or 600 Volt with THHN, XLPE and EPR insulations are available, each with unique advantages and usages. From an expense standpoint, 600 volt  Cable Tray carries a higher cost than the 300 volt due to the higher energy level. With the different types of insulations, EPR insulation carries a higher expensive due to its nature and what more it offers over THHN and XLPE cables.

The focus of this article will be the 600 Volt Cable Trays.

Starting with the basic Nylon conductor insulation, THHN/PVC (Thermoplastic High Heat Resistant) the, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) defines the jacket covering the conductors. In the industry, we understand the environments this type of cable will be used in, by the insulation type that is required. Standard options would be indoors, outdoors, conduit and tray, and directly underground. In all cases, these particular Cable Trays are suited for direct burial. So the question may be… what’s the difference between them?

In an attempt to answer this question, it is important to understand the characteristics of these different types of Cable Trays. Item costs vary based on these characteristics. As stated, THHN/PVC is the more basic version. XLPE/PVC, Cross-linked Polyethylene, has all the same characteristics of THHN but also has a flame retardant insulation. With this comes a slightly more expensive item than the THHN. Another variation of Cable Tray is EPR/CPE (Ethylene Propylene Rubber/Chlorinated Polyethylene). This is the rubber version of Cable Tray which holds its flexibility and is more ideal in cold temperatures. Where THHN and XLPE become stiff and therefore difficult to work with in these weather conditions, EPR/CPE becomes the item of choice. EPR/CPE however, is more expensive and is not readily available, and as a result, it is not unusual to expect minimum run quantities and 6-8 week lead-times for this product.

Some distributors keep the THHN/PVC Cable Tray in stock because it is a universal cable that isn’t much more expensive than standard types of electrical wire. Where much of the cost is in this cable is in the copper which has been experiencing historically high costs in the market.

A cable, such as NM-B wire in 6 awg 3 conductors with ground, can only be used indoors, while a Cable Tray 6 awg 3 conductors can not only be used outdoors but it can even be buried directly in the ground due to the nature of how it is manufactured. Yet the cost difference between the two is only about 10-15%. So, if you purchase the NM-B wire in an attempt to save a few pennies and then realize the cable needs to run outdoors, you run a risk utilizing that cable. When that cable is exposed to water, the electrical problems caused could carry a much greater expense.
