Reforms to Postal Service will affect everyone

Based on what we see on the shelves of major retailers, drug stores and grocery stores, an awful lot of people still like to send real, honest-to-goodness, paper-and-ink greeting cards. Sure, we get a lot of those so-called "e-cards" these days, but it's tough for grandparents to slip a $10 bill into an e-card for a girl who's celebrating her 6th birthday. And what self-respecting son feels good about sending an "e-hug" on Mother's Day?

When we put a stamp on our holiday greetings, graduation cards or sympathy notes, we don't have to worry about how many miles our message will travel to reach its destination. A card sent from Rochester to Pine Island costs the same amount as one sent to Pine Island, Texas (it's near Houston, and by car is 1,136 miles from Rochester).

Universal pricing for letters is something we take for granted, but it wasn't always that way. When the first U.S. postage stamps were printed in 1847, the 5-cent stamp (featuring Benjamin Franklin) was for letters less than 1 ounce and traveling less than 300 miles. George Washington appeared on the 10-center, which was for anything beyond 300 miles or up to 2 ounces.

Might we be facing a return of that kind of pricing system?

Probably not anytime in the immediate future, but it's safe to say that over the next few years, the United States Postal Service will consider every available option in its never-ending effort to streamline, cut costs and increase revenue.

A painful part of that cost-cutting process, unfortunately, is already beginning to play out in thousands of small towns across the nation, including several in southeastern Minnesota. Waltham, Millville and Peterson are on the list of towns that may lose their post offices, and four more in Freeborn County also face the possibility of closure.

There's no sugar-coating the fact that this is bad news for those who live and work in these communities. Granted, it's not as crushing a blow as the closure of a school or the departure of a major employer, but a post office confers a certain "officialness." It's is an important part of a town's identity, much like the corner cafe, the grocery store and the grain elevator. Conversely, a closed post office has an inescapable aura of finality, of vitality lost.
