2011 Ram Mega Cab 2500: Most luxurious Ram ever asks - Why make work drudgery?

It seems it's just not PC anymore to drive a pickup truck for fun.

Conventional wisdom dictates that the pickup segment — should the economy ever actually recover — will gain back only those buyers who really need what a pickup can do. "Personal use" buyers, we're told, have been lost forever to fuel-efficient cars and car-based crossover SUVs.

We'll see.

In the meantime, Ram figures, if that's the way it's going to be, we may as well make a work truck fun.

Meet the 2011 Ram Mega Cab 2500 Longhorn Edition heavy duty turbo diesel 4x4. (For the record, it's no longer Dodge Ram, just Ram.)

First of all, this is a trucker's truck. It'll tow nearly seven-and-a-half tons, and it's loaded with features to make that task more pleasant: a tow/haul mode on the available automatic transmission, manual-shift capability on that automatic, parabolic mirrors incorporated into the standard outside rear-views, a factory-installed electronic brake controller and, in our diesel model, a standard exhaust brake for the really heavy loads.

The big 2500 also feels every bit the truck it is — big enough to have its own ZIP code, high enough to require rappelling equipment to climb in and bouncy as a trampoline when traveling unladen over ragged pavement.

Inside the cabin, however, the big guy is remarkably quiet — even equipped with the diesel, as was ours — and the amenities in our Longhorn Edition were enough to make a rock star blush.

A tour of Longhorn's humongous Mega Cab — Ram HD also is available with regular and crew cabs — turns up cowhide seats with western-motif accents etched into the leather (a tamer décor is available), Longhorn patches sewn into seat backs, two-tone décor with leather covering everything that isn't capped with wood or bright chrome, seat-back pockets on the front seats that could stunt-double as saddle bags, heated and cooled front seats and heated outboard rear seats — there's more, but you get the idea.

Oh, here's more: standard touch-screen navigation and optional rear-seat video with Sirius rear-seat satellite TV(!). That'll keep the work crew happy.

And, just to ensure the neighbors know you've got something special, the Longhorn Edition's exterior boasts raised metal badges on front doors, a big chrome grille, louvered hood and two-tone paint.

The only complaint I could muster was the steering wheel, which tilts but lacks a telescope feature. The power-adjust pedals, however, ameliorate that issue somewhat.
