COLUMN: Rude boaters don't realize what they're doing

Rude fishermen will do it every time for me. I was fishing with a gentleman on the beach for pompano in front of his cottage when some jerks on jet skis ran over our lines. Not once but twice.

It made me as mad as a wet hen but he just took it in stride saying, “They don’t realize what they are doing.” He could defuse a situation better than anyone I’ve known. I would rather light the fuse.

It wasn’t that long ago while fishing in the pass with a gentleman from South Florida that we had one of those occasions that lately have been happening more often. First let me explain the dos and don’ts concerning fishing the pass.

There are two ways to fish in the pass, dropping straight down or casting a lure or live bait. Fishing for redfish with live bait doesn’t require much talent. Simply use a light lead with a swivel and a few feet of leader tied to the hook and add a choffer or whatever live bait you might want.

Most people go up current, turn off the motor and drift back until they either catch a fish or move out of them and then repeat the process. Every now and then you will run into a fisherman that must think his anchor in the way of the other fishermen that are drift fishing. This is not the thing to do.

When you anchor, you get into every other fisherman’s way and if he is fighting a fish chances are the fish will tangle in the anchor line. Usually you can work around the anchored boats without much trouble. The other way to fish for reds is to anchor on the edge of the channel in shallow water and artificial lures or fly fish.

There are guides and non-guides doing this every afternoon with not an angry word spoken. Then comes Mr. Guide Wanna Be with his buddies from parts unknown and he’s going to show them a good time even if it is at the expense of other people. Is this rudeness, indifference or he just doesn’t have a clue what going on. I think it is a combination of all three.

This is happening all the time lately. The guy fishing with me on this afternoon said the fishermen around here had the worst manners he has ever seen. He said if they did this in Key West they would be run off the water.

Have you ever been snapper fishing and had someone come roaring up to your boat and start fishing your spot. If this is a public spot they should at least ask if you minded their intrusion. If it is a spot you spent thousands of dollars building it can go from push to shove in a hurry and some pretty rough words will fly.

COLUMN: Rude boaters don't realize what they're doing

A fellow using his trolling motor easing down the beach looking for reds and pompano doesn't appreciate you ripping and roaring in water he expects to fish as he moves down the beach. In other words, show a little consideration.
