B-Mets salvage split with Senators
Collin McHugh and Jack Egbert combined to limit Harrisburg to two runs on five hits in Binghamton's 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at Metro Bank Park. McHugh allowed a run on three hits over five innings for his fourth win and Egbert finished the game with four innings of one-run ball for his second save.
The Senators drew first blood with a run in the first inning off McHugh. Josh Johnson walked to start the inning and was replaced at first by Leonard Davis, who hit into a fielder's choice to the pitcher. Chris Rahl followed with a triple of the right field wall to score Davis and give Harrisburg a 1-0 lead.
Binghamton (44-65) came back to take the lead for good in the third against starter Erik Davis. Raul Reyes reached on an infield single to open the frame. Jean Luc Blaquiere joined him aboard when shortstop Chris McConnell booted a potential double-play ball. Davis buckled down to strike out the next two hitters, but could not escape the inning unscathed as Mike Fisher clubbed a triple to deep center to put Binghamton ahead 2-1.
The B-Mets were back at it in the fifth. McHugh led off the inning with a single through the right side. Davis then walked Matt den Dekker to reach Fisher. The B-Mets second baseman laid down a bunt, but the catcher popped out, fielded it and forced McHugh at third. The botched bunt proved immaterial as Jordany Valdespin smoked a two-run triple into the right field corner to plate both runners and advance the lead to 4-1. He would score on a Juan Lagares single to round out the scoring for Binghamton.
Harrisburg (61-48) got its final run in the sixth against Egbert. Leonard Davis led off the inning with a slow groundball to second. Fisher charged in, scooped it up and flipped the ball to first with his glove. However, Allan Dykstra could not glove the throw and was charged with an error. After Rahl struck out, Tyler Moore singled to left, which allowed Davis to reach third. On a payoff pitch to Bryce Harper, Egbert missed in the dirt and the ball squirted away allowing Davis to score. It proved to be the only run allowed by Egbert.
Davis was charged with his seventh loss despite striking out eight. He allowed five runs on six hits over five innings.
Juan Lagares led the B-Mets nine-hit attack with a 3-for-4 showing including an RBI.
Binghamton will enjoy an off day tomorrow after playing 18 straight days. Tuesday the team returns to the road for a three-game set at Altoona beginning at 7 PM. The B-Mets have yet to name their starter and the Curve will send RHP Phil Irwin (4-3, 4.73) to the hill. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
