A Focus on Fiber Arts: Creating summer weaving memories for your children

“Oh my gosh! I remember when I use to do this when I was a kid! They still make these!” They were referring to the potholder looms that most of us grew up with, churning out one potholder after another, until our bag of “loopers” were gone. Loopers were the knit circles that came in a myriad of colors. The loopers were actually a waste product of the hosiery industry, and the potholder loom was the answer of what to do this all of these loopers. The loom frames which were usually around 8” came in materials that ranged from plastic, Bakelite, wood and metal. Presently they can be found in plastic or metal, and can vary greatly in quality. A heavy weight frame will be more durable and hold up better during the weaving process. Loopers also vary in quality. Good quality loopers, which are usually cotton, will be consistent in size which will result in a far less frustrating weaving experience. I remember as a child weaving with loopers that were thick, thin, short and long, and sometimes the looper wasn’t even usable. I think that it is very possible that these loopers may have been made with nylon as well as cotton. The weaving was easy to do, and small fingers could push the loopers over and under, and over and under again till the frame was filled. Using a crochet hook, the edges would be worked, resulting in the finished potholder. These pieces could also be sewn together to create little purses, or even doll rugs. A young color artist could also plan a specific color pattern to follow as opposed to a more free form color way. Age six and up is the recommended age for these looms. “Oh my gosh! Mother's legacy lives on in little loops and knits

American Doll Clothes Patterns - Where can I find free american ...

Have you checked out Crochetpatterncentral.com? I always check there first! There are tons of doll clothes patterns there(see sources). If you see something you like but it’s not the right size you can probably adjust the pattern to make it work. Let me know if you need help doing that.

Check out this thread on Crochetville, too, there was a whole discussion about doll clothes for 18" dolls:

For one, don’t search for "American Girl" patterns, or you’ll only find patterns for a fee.

Search for doll clothing patterns. American Girl dolls are 18" dolls, correct? I’ll provide a link here from one of my favorite free pattern websites. Many of the links are for patterns for 18" dolls, but remember if you find a pattern for a smaller doll, just increase the hook size or switch up the yarn from sport to worsted weight and you should have a size which will fit your doll.
