Swiss Artist Ferdinand Hodler

Modern masters from a unique Swiss collection

Built between 1905 and Winterthur in 1936 by an ophthalmologist, Arthur Hahnloser, artist and his wife, Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler, the collection is a valuable snapshot of a period in the history of art in balance between impressionism and modernism.

Switzerland has a tradition of family art collections: the Beyeler (Fondation Beyeler in Basel), the Bechtlers (Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Atlanta, Georgia), Martin Bodmer (Bodmer Foundation in Geneva), the Sacher's Hoffman La Roche and families (Schaulager and Tinguely Museum in Basel), Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and Uli Sigg (Chinese contemporary art), among others.

The Parallelism of Ferdinand Hodler 1853-1918 - Tartuffe's Folly

&Nbsp;   Hodler (1853-1918) was born in Berne, the eldest of six children. However, by the time he was fourteen, both of his parents and his five siblings had all succumbed to tuberculosis, seeding his lifelong awareness and preoccupation with mortality. At age ten, he apprenticed with Ferdinand Sommer; and, at age eighteen, he travelled to Geneva “on foot”, embarking on his artistic career. He found significant success; often studied the masters; and married twice. Hodler became quickly well known for his bold colorations, his keen draughting skills, and his unique treatments. His famous oil, “ And if we run scarce of provisions, there is always the bait shop down the dirt road.

My spirit navigates freely from that of Pied Piper to bookworm to Lord Fauntleroy to that of a Bohemian crusader. You best pour a healthy cup of coffee or glass of pinot noir.

And, yes, we have pets here at Marklewood: a dozen at most recent census. I refer to them fondly as the Twelve Noble & Apostolic Pusses, but they are much more than any label or moniker would suggest. All are indeed rescues or their progeny, with five having been elevated to "indoor" status. The other seven serve sentry here in the stillness of an ancient pine woods. And if we run scarce of provisions, there is always the bait shop down the dirt road.

Alas, poor Tartuffe has been missing since May of '10. Legend has it that he has embarked on some grand theatrical adventure, perhaps in New York. But I like to think that his spirit hovers over head.
