The power of one
The Perpetual fund manager’s disdain for ties is well known, but he picked up the pair in a two-for-one sale for occasions when he just can’t avoid wearing one. At least he got value for money. Warming to the theme of her boss’s careful spending habits, Sevior’s assistant, Melissa Jones, pulls out a 10-pack of pens he recently bought for $2.
Perched on a chair among the happy clutter of soccer balls and sportswear in his cosy 16th-floor office on Sydney’s Pitt St, Sevior says he is weighing up his next big accessory purchase – a watch to replace the analog Casio he has worn for a decade. “My date thing has finally broken now, so I’m tossing up whether to trade it in for a new one,” Sevior says seriously. “I bought it for $48.95 at Bondi Junction 10 years ago. It tells the time. What more do you need in a watch?”
For a man arguably worth $185 million – that’s how much was carved off Perpetual’s market value in the month after his decision to take a six-month sabbatical from July 1 was made public – Sevior is scrupulous about how he spends his money.
Sure, he nests fairly close to the Packers and Murdochs in a five-bedroom house in Sydney’s old-money Bellevue Hill, but the family of four has just one car, a 2005 Subaru Outback with a dodgy clutch. His only personal indulgence is a new pair of running shoes every six months.
“I’m not mean. Just for myself, I’m thrifty. We have never been poor, but I suppose if your parents die when you are be around as long as most parents. When they died, I realised I had a choice to sink or swim. It wouldn’t be a conscious thought – you can only wrap more rational words around it when you look back 30 years later – but I made a choice to swim hard. The irony is I am a terrible swimmer.” He lived with relatives until he went to boarding school.
Sevior, 49, says he has a high threshold for disappointment and an underlying steeliness. Even so, he’s had a few anxious moments in the past month as increasing conjecture about his future has brought to the fore old tensions between the investment and executive teams at Perpetual.
New chief executive Chris Ryan may run the company, but it’s the work of Sevior and his team that provides the foundations. From a business with $1.5 billion in funds under management that was making no money when Sevior started as an analyst in 1994, Perpetual Investments has increased its funds to $28 billion. A division that consistently earns about $60 million a year, it is the biggest part of Perpetual.
