Fran Drescher: 'Happily' green

Fran Drescher has made a concerted effort to live in a home that's "as toxin-free as it possibly can be." A survivor of uterine cancer, she points out that many cancers have environmental causes, and through her foundation CancerSchmancer.org has created a program called Trash Cancer, "which encourages and educates people to get rid of highly toxic things that they bring into their homes, their personal care items and what they put into their mouths. I use all biodegradable, toxin-free things to clean my house and try to use as much healthy, organic, natural personal care products and eat as much organic food as possible," she says. "I try not to use that much plastic and I recycle. I never drink from plastic and I try not to use single-use plastic bags." Drescher is back in the TV spotlight as the star of the Wednesday night TV Land sitcom "Happily Divorced," based on her own reality — Peter Marc Jacobson, her high school sweetheart and husband of nearly two decades, announced he was gay and they divorced, but they continued to live together for financial reasons. "I always write about what I know. For me to come back to television it had to mean something to me," explains Drescher, who thought the relationship was fresh sitcom fodder. "The characters have taken on a life of their own and the stories are not necessarily things that have happened to us but the emotional arcs are personal to us," she says. Even though she's not that keen on stunt casting at the expense of developing the regular characters and establishing the foundation necessary for a long run, next month's guest roster will include two of her former co-stars from "The Nanny." Charles Shaughnessy will play a swinger, and Renee Taylor, her mom in that show, will play her parents' (Rita Moreno, Robert Walden) neighbor in this one. Lou Diamond Phillips will also guest in August. Drescher has fond memories of "The Nanny," the hit '90s sitcom that made her a star. "I knew we caught lightning in a bottle the night we did the pilot and 18 years later it's still going strong," she says, pointing out its rerun popularity. "It's a phenomenon and one that I'm very grateful to have been a part of and the creator of.
