Domestic Electric Boiler

Time to turn off your gas supply?

Just like any other product or service, the cost of gas is basically determined by supply and demand. That point has hit home hard in the past six months as gas suppliers have announced price hikes for supplying domestic gas customers. Scottish Power was the first with a 19% rise in its standard tariff, followed by British Gas and others.

Gas has been the power source of choice for a lot of UK consumers since the mid 1970s with the flow of gas from our North Sea deposits. Demand in the UK soared as gas-fired central heating became the norm.

However, a range of factors have placed increasing demand on existing gas supplies. First, rising consumption has meant new supplies have had to be sought in locations meaning greater cost and difficulty. Then, from the 1980s gas increasingly replaced coal in electricity generation. The recent accident at a nuclear plan in Japan has seen governments reluctant to commit to new nuclear power stations and thus more demand on gas for electricity production. Finally, the rise of emerging markets greatly increased the gas demand.

As our North Sea deposits began to be used up the UK has become a net importer of gas. This means competing with other countries for supplies from places like Russia and Algeria.

Further pressure comes from the plain fact that the widespread acceptance of climate change means that gas has a premium placed on it through carbon reduction legislation.

All of which leaves UK domestic gas consumers in a quandary. First, do they ‘fix’ the price using the terms most providers offer for a period of years or do they rely on the standard tariff? Also, more fundamentally, is now the time to think about going electric for heating and cooking as electricity can come from renewable sources while gas - by its nature - can not?

Naturally, the latter course of action implies large capital expenditure now, such as replacing a gas boiler with an electric one. But with no end to gas price rises in sight, this may pay over the long term.

This is the case much of the time when the boiler is not making a tank of domestic hot water. This is a huge savings when coupled with the fact that they are 97% efficient to begin with. Commercial models are available that fire in 10% increments.

If heat pumps are to provide this heat, even with optimistic assumptions as to their performance in the UK housing stock, this would result in a doubling of domestic electrical energy demand, ignoring any increase for electric vehicle charging.

Electric Boilers For The Home

In recent years the rising cost of domestic power has tended to make electric boilers not as popular as other options such as those heated by gas. However, improvements in energy efficiency have led to a recent increase in the popularity of the electric boiler.

One advantage that electric boilers enjoy over the other alternatives is that their installation and maintenance costs tend to be less expensive. This is important to remember when you find that they are usually more expensive to buy than gas boilers. And for the more ecologically minded customers, the electric version will reduce their carbon footprint especially if they are signed up to a green electricity tariff.

Another advantage of electric boilers over other types of boiler is that they are compact, thereby saving on space. This has led to many building developers choosing to have them being installed in flats and apartments, but they are also very popular in rural areas where piped gas is not available.

As with every type of boiler the electric version needs to be regularly serviced and maintained for it to operate at its most optimum efficiency. It is essential that the unit is serviced once a year by a qualified technician and that any faulty parts or ones showing signs of wear are replaced immediately.

There are several types of electrical boiler available for consumers including the combination-boiler which produces hot water on demand. Of course the deciding factors on choosing th4e electric boiler for you will depend on the type of property you are living in, as well as cost and personal preference.
