Road Test: Citroën DS4

The DS4, expanding Citroën’s DS line into Focus, Astra and Golf territory, shares the same coupe-based styling cues as the DS3, but looks to be to a significant degree more sensible – which according to Citroën suits the market it is launching into.

There are the sharp lines, a clever mix of coupe meets five-door hatch, and natty details such as the rear door handles hidden in the window surround. But the car doesn’t turn heads like the DS3, it doesn’t present quite such an immediately recognisable silhouette when encountered on the road.

Slip inside, however, and you immediately notice your surroundings are rather special. It looks seriously style-led, with lots of symetrical shapes pleasing on the eye, yet it’s practical too, everything falling naturally to hand.

The drilled aluminium pedals are a nice touch, the leather upholstery an even nicer one with two tones complementing each other well. You do feel as if you are in an upmarket environment.

The driver gets rather a commanding view, the seat placed high compared to rivals, which is not a bad thing. The panoramic screen extending up over one’s head is also notable. Space is plentiful too, in front and rear, belying the coupe exterior look.

The five engines split into three petrols of 118, 153 and 197bhp and a pair of diesels offering either 108 or 157bhp. The smaller diesel can also be supplied with Citroën’s confusingly-named ‘micro-hybrid’ technology. No, an electric motor is not involved as a power source, it’s the French brand’s catch-all for its eco-friendly features.

Mated to a six-speed electronic gearbox, these features include auto stop-start (this the novel version that uses a reversible alternator and thus doesn’t involve the starter motor) and regenerative braking. In this format the engine does stretch fuel economy by up to 15 per cent and offer 114g/km emissions.

The fact that all three petrol units have called upon technology from BMW suggests they are going to impress, and most likable of all is the most powerful, the THP 200. With an 8.5-second 0-62mph time it’s swift enough for most, and it feels pacy too, while returning 44mpg fuel economy – impressive for an engine of this power.
