Home-garden author to share garden-party ideas
On Monday she'll bring her garden inspiration to a lecture at the Tulsa Garden Center, presented by the Tulsa Herb Society, with ideas on making every day a fiesta through the colors of the garden and with festive menus and recipes.
Her own Austin, Texas, home and garden will serve as the backdrop to the presentation. Hutson's garden is a true extension of her whimsical bungalow, which is painted a vibrant purple with deep coral trim.
In this cottage garden, there's room to walk, to sit, to party and to breathe in the heady fragrance of flowers and herbs that fill the landscape.
In her book "The Herb Garden Cookbook," Hutson shares ideas for using the garden as an entertainment space. She encourages keeping a journal and cutting out ideas from magazines to create a garden plan.
One of her favorite ideas is developing a kitchen garden. One way to do this is by growing a theme garden based on your favorite cuisine. Herbs from Mexico, the Mediterranean, Tuscany and India are all good choices.
"Herbs from the same plot go in the same pot," she said.
Or, plant a "salad bar," so you can gather edible herbs and flowers for a salad right outside your door.
Hutson is a fan of themed garden parties, including everything from an at-dusk garden soiree to a basil feast. Her Tuesday night soirees were legendary in Austin garden circles. Hutson made the first big batch of sangria, and guests brought a bottle of wine to add to it.
5 questions with Lucinda Hutson Q: Could you share some simple ideas for turning a garden into an "outdoor room?"
A: Create outdoor courtyards and intimate vignettes with personal themes. Showcase your passion with special touches and mementos from travel, family and special interests. Perhaps raise — or lower — the space to stand out. Think porch, deck, raised stone or brick. Provide comfy furniture, ambient lighting, artistic features.
Q: How do you incorporate your loves for garden and food?
A: I prepare dishes with ingredients from the garden, especially flavoring dishes with fresh herbs and spices, and paying great attention to garnish and presentation — edible flowers and aromatic culinary herbs.
