Attentive mother, long-distance doctoring combine to save a critically ill infant

When Ashley Graber nudged her napping infant awake around 4:30 p.m. the second Sunday in June and noticed what looked like bruises on the baby's tummy and chest, two thoughts crossed her mind.

First: Her 7-month-old, MaLea Anne Fox, had meningitis. Second: Leaping to that conclusion was a mother's paranoia, plain and simple.

Doctors at Providence Seaside Hospital had examined the child that morning, after Graber, 25, brought her in with a 102-degree fever. She checked out OK so, suspecting a virus, they sent MaLea home and advised treating her with Tylenol.

But after her nap, MaLea's fever ticked up to 103. The bruise-like rash, new since they'd been to the hospital, prompted Graber to turn to her sister, whose children are older than Graber's.

She photographed MaLea's torso and shipped the image by phone to Jessica Hinman-Seeley of Warrenton, about 15 miles up the coast from Graber's Seaside apartment.

One look at the photo and Hinman-Seeley suggested her sister get MaLea to the emergency room, but this time to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. That way, Graber could first swing through Warrenton and drop off her 3-year-old daughter, Shyann Fox, at her sister's.

Graber loaded the girls in her car and hurried north. She had no idea what a long journey lay ahead.

Pediatrician Katrina McPherson was at the movies June 12 when her pager buzzed. From the theater lobby, she called Columbia Memorial.

Laura Maskell, an emergency room doctor, described a feverish baby with a rash. She suspected meningococcemia , a bacterial infection so aggressive it can kill a child in six hours; though rare, Oregon has among the nation's higher rates, averaging 35 to 40 cases a year.

Maskell planned to start MaLea on antibiotics and fluids and wondered if McPherson had other advice.

McPherson suggested telemedicine. Columbia Memorial belongs to the Late on a Sunday night in June, MaLea Fox's mother rushed the 7-month-old to an Astoria hospital, without knowing her daughter had potentially fatal meningococcemia. The ER doctor consulted with an OHSU pediatric intensive-care specialist, who made the diagnosis and via a video teleconference persuaded the child's mother that her infant needed to be intubated. Treatment began even as crews tried to whisk MaLea to Portland by air. Then, the helicopter carrying her was turned back by bad weather.

These baby gift ideas are very easy to find and very reasonable at a store like Target. For $50 you can get a whole assortment of goodies.

1. Clothing: All babies need clothing, and they grow very fast! If you have ever shopped for baby clothes you may be amazed to see that there are several different sizes of clothes needed for the baby just during the first year!

There is 0-1 month, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months and on and on! Therefore, there are plenty of types of clothing that will be needed in plenty of different sizes. Just remember to keep in mind how old the baby currently is, because baby clothing sizes change rapidly, and you would not want to buy a gift that is already too small by the time you present it to the parents!

2. Teething toys: All babies ‘teeth’ and will need little chew toys of sorts. These may become dirty quickly and it is probably smart to replace them often, so a number of these teething toys may be useful. You might find ones with rattles or bells. Just make sure it is not big enough for a baby to swallow.

3. Stuffed animals: A cute stuffed animal may make a nice gift. The softest kind available may be liked the most for snuggly comfort. Additionally, some of these stuffed animals may have sounds built in. You may want one that makes sounds, or you may want an old fashioned one without noise. A good example is Winnie-The-Pooh or Eyeore.

4. Diapers: Parents always need diapers and they are a very practical and useful gift. Just remember to look at the sizes correctly, considering how many months old the baby is. You also might find out what type of diapers the parent prefers to use.
