South Bend Washington forward to visit Ball State on Monday
Basketball recruits by the thousands will be taking unofficial visits to campuses across the nation this week as college coaches try to reel in the players they have evaluated for the past month on the AAU circuit.
Ball State will be one of the few, though, that offers its visitors front-row seats to official practices. The Cardinals will resume practice Monday in preparation for their four exhibition games between Aug. 8-16 in Vancouver, Canada.
The NCAA grants 10 organized practices to any team taking a foreign tour. The Cardinals held three of those practices in mid July, leaving seven at their disposal over the course of the next seven days. The opportunity to hold official practices in front of recruits this week is one of the underlying bonuses to the Cardinals participating in their first foreign tour since 1989.
"Normally you go through and you tell them this is how we practice and this is how we play," Ball State coach Billy Taylor said. "... What a great opportunity for these guys to come to practice. You can see my coaching style. You can see how we play, how I teach. The only thing the guys miss is that they don't have the opportunity to play with our guys. But it's a huge, huge bonus for us."
NCAA rules prevent Taylor from speaking about specific recruits, but South Bend Washington 6-foot-6 senior forward Bo Calhoun confirmed he will visit campus Monday. His mother and Washington coach Chad Johnston will accompany Calhoun on the visit.
"I want to get down there, see the environment and see how the coach is with the players," Calhoun said.
Calhoun already claims a scholarship offer from Western Michigan. The Broncos offered him when he took an unofficial visit there, and Johnston said he and Calhoun intend to return to Western Michigan for another visit sometime later this week.
Johnston mentioned Bowling Green and Toledo as two other Mid-American Conference programs who recently invited Calhoun to visit their respective campuses.
"I'm still pretty open," Calhoun said. "I want to go on visits and see what I like about most of them. I'm probably going to commit by the middle of August."
Calhoun averaged 18.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game as a junior for South Bend Washington. Ball State took note of him this past month on the AAU circuit. Calhoun said he spotted Taylor at his first July AAU tournament in Indianapolis and his last in Fort Wayne.
"They kind of look for him to take the place of (senior forward) Jarrod Jones," Johnston said. "... They're just really impressed with him. They say they can get him 30-plus minutes a game.
