It has been brought to our attention that you are selling or distributing, for commercial purposes, items depicting current University of Alabama student-athletes, specifically, items autographed by current student-athletes. The use of a current student-athlete's name or likeness on commercial items offered for sale, or for advertising or promotional purposes, without his or her knowledge or permission can jeopardize the student-athlete's eligibility to participate in intercollegiate athletics with the National Collegiate Athletic Association. If a student-athlete’s name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, playing cards, posters, photographs) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete’s knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. You are fully responsible for the content you post. Content that includes profanity, personal attacks or antisocial behavior (such as "spamming" or "trolling"), or other inappropriate content or material will be removed. Title Changes and Continuations: Immediate continuation of the March 1873 (Vol. 1, No. 4) issue of The Experiment , “Progress and Perseverance.” Both newspapers are self-described as “A family paper, devoted to Literature, Agriculture, News, Family affairs, and General Improvement.”
One of the student editors, Charles A. Pierce, was the son of Charles W. Pierce, a civil war veteran, who was transferred to Demopolis, Alabama in 1866 as a major with the Freedman’s Bureau and District commander of western Alabama. The senior Pierce served one term in the 41st Congress from Alabama’s fourth district in 1867. I was during this time that his son, Charles A., began his first handwritten newspaper, The Experiment Countless kind people--historians, librarians, archivists, colleagues, friends and family members--assisted me with this project. This bibliography and collection would not have been possible without them and is the better because of their assistance and advice. There are too many to thank by name, but I owe a special debt of gratitude to the archivists and librarians at the State Historical Society of Iowa in Iowa City, IA, for introducing me to handwritten newspapers (notably the Quarterly Visitor ) and helping me with my initial research into this fascinating cultural phenomenon; to Dr. Carolyn S.
