Finalists in the 55th annual Walkley Awards
HERE they are folks: the finalists. If you’re on this list, good you good thing!!
Laurie Oakes is there, for Scoop of the Year. He cut right through the spin of the election, presenting Julia Gillard with the cold, hard facts surrounding the knifing of Kevin Rudd. No-one who saw it will ever forget him taking to the microphone at the Press Club, and putting the new PM on the spot.
In the same category, though, you’ve got Chris Uhlmann with The Scoop on Rudd getting rolled, which was no small get; and Patricia Karvelas and Dennis Shanahan in The Australian, with the story that predicted that knives would soon be drawn. It’s all fantastic.
Then, too, there is David Marr’s essay on Kevin Rudd, which helped changed the course of history. He’s in for Best Magazine Writing with Andrew Rule, one of the best essayists in the country.
Sky News is there for its coverage of the Federal Election 2010, and in particular, the way it covered the fall of Rudd.
Paul McGeough is there, for his coverage of the flotilla, where he was arrested and detained. Kerry O’Brien is there, for his interviews with Rudd and Tony Abbott, on show he’s just quit, The 7:30 Report.
But we could say great things about all of them, so on with the show:
