Sidewalk Art Chalk Contest Draws Artists to Library
The Sayville Public Library held its annual Sidewalk Art Chalk Contest on July 21. Participants got creative as they decorated the sidewalks around the library. The family-friendly program had 40 registrants ranging in age from 17 months to teenagers.
The children had the opportunity to pick their own square to draw on, which were numbered from one to 40 around the perimeter of the building. After picking up their bag of chalk, they got busy with their creations.
“It’s a fun family program,” said Donna DiBeradino, the head children’s librarian. “It’s inexpensive, it’s easy and it gets everyone out the building and gives them a chance to be creative.”
Indeed, they were all very creative. There were drawings of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, skyscrapers, flowers, butterflies, and dragons. There were also important messages: “Sayville Loves to Read,” “Welcome Summer,” “Live, Learn, Read,” and “Don’t Hide in Your Shell,” which featured a cute turtle.
After the contestants put down their chalk, a library employee will judge all the works. Last year, three winners are picked and Miss Donna said it will likely be three again, since it’s so hard to choose just one of the wonderful designs. Each winner will receive an age appropriate gift.
During the contest, the library staff was also on hand passing out water and popsicles for the children and adults too.
