Fela's destiny and mine were tied together – Ghariokwu Lemi

Lemi Ghariokwu is one of the few people who intimately knew the late Afro-beat king, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He is also the first artist to pioneer record sleeve design on a professional level in Nigeria, starting with the cover of Fela’s hit song, Alagbon Close in 1972. It was the first of 26 cover albums that spanned his career with the maestro for which he received a cheque for N120. This 55-year-old self-thought visionary artist is also the man behind hundreds of covers for musicians like Bob Marley, Chris Okotie, Osita Osadebe, James Iroha, Gilles Peterson, Miriam Makeba and Lucky Dube. He was also a consulting album cover designer for Polygram Records in Nigeria for about a decade, designing more than 200 covers for them. Lemi refrained from going to the university based on Fela’s advice that education was a waste of time and though he was only 18 when he met Fela and was uncomfortable with the Kalakuta environment at the time, Lemi recalls that “There were times I got really scared because the Kalakuta environment was very physical, I couldn’t even relate with certain things happening around then”. Born at Isa Street in Sango area of Agege, Lagos on Monday, December 26, 1955, Lemi’s ancestry stems from Alishimi Idimuku in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State. He is the first and only surviving male of about nine children, but currently has five females as siblings. “My mother had about nine children; before me she had a still birth, and after me she had another still birth; there was a boy, Patrick born in Akoka, Lagos before Vero but he died of yellow fever. In those days, knowledge of yellow fever control was not much and the vaccine was not available. A nurse injected him and he almost went crazy before he passed on four days later.  “She used to make beverage drink very thick and would empty a whole tin of milk into it inside one big jug and dispensing it in one very fine Chinese cup. She’s a very high class, senior-girl kind of woman and she was a concubine of either the Saduana of Sokoto or Tafawa Balewa. I was too young to be sure, but the man used to come with a lot of security when he visited her, and that was when I got exposed to cars because this man used to come in a car that would pass for a limousine now, but the car I later grew up to know was a wide American Chevrolet, or a Pontiac. The engine was virtually silent.

Celtic Woman is an all-female musical ensemble conceived and assembled by Sharon Browne and David Downes, a former musical director of the Irish stage show Riverdance. Downes' concept was to tap into the American marketplace's taste for Celtic music and culture by confecting a group that blended the Irish elements of Michael Flatley's music and dance with the structure of all-girl pop groups such as Spice Girls and Pussycat Dolls. In 2004, he recruited five Irish female musicians who had not previously performed together: vocalists Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Lisa Kelly and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt, and shaped them into the first lineup of the group that he named Celtic Woman. Downes chose a repertoire that would range from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs.

The group's lineup has changed over the years; in 2009, the group consisted of Chloë Agnew, Lynn Hilary, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt; Alex Sharpe left the group in May 2010. Five albums have been released under the name "Celtic Woman": Celtic Woman, Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration, Celtic Woman: A New Journey, Celtic Woman: The Greatest Journey, and Celtic Woman: Songs from the Heart. The group has undertaken a number of world tours.
