"Twelve Angry Men" Opens This Weekend

What A Do Theatres third production of its inaugural season, the classic "Twelve Angry Men" presented by HBC Contracting and written by Reginald Rose, opens Friday, July 15.

Ron Ware as Juror #8 and Alex deFinta as Juror #3 headline the cast. Ware, in fact, becomes the first actor to make a return appearance to the What A Do Theatre stage. Ware starred in AFFLUENZA!, What A Dos debut production. Calhoun County Commissioner Jim Haadsma (District #3) makes a cameo appearance as The Bailiff. Artistic Director Randy Wolfe is directing Twelve Angry Men and appears as Juror #7.

Also starring are: Ian Russell (Foreman), Jon Koteles (Juror #2), Bill Sutherland (Juror #4), Chuck Kincaid (Juror #5), Stephen Steinbacher (Juror #6), Bob Russell (Juror #9), Michael Andres (Juror #10), Jonathan Scovie (Juror #11), and Thomas Brennan (Juror #12).

'Twelve Angry Men' is as timely as it was when Rose first penned this story nearly 60 years ago, said Ed Creech, managing director of What A Do Theatre. With the Casey Anthony verdict fresh in the news, 'Twelve Angry Men' gives the audience a look into the jury room during deliberations. This wonderful cast evokes a sense of tension and emotion that is underscored by the lighting, sound, and visual effects created by our talented production team. I cant wait for Opening Night!

"Twelve Angry Men" first premiered in 1954 as an Emmy Award winning episode of the television series CBS Studio One and has been made into a feature film starring Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb and an award-winning Broadway play.

"Twelve Angry Men" will run for seven performances July 15-17, 22-23, and 29-30. All performances will be at What A Do Theatre, 111 East Michigan Avenue (located inside First United Methodist Church), in downtown Battle Creek. Show time is 8 p.m. for the Friday-Saturday performances and 3 p.m. for the Sunday matinee.

Reservations can be made by visiting www.whatado.org . Ticket prices range from $15-20. Seniors (65 and older), students, and members of the Armed Forces and veterans receive a 10% discount with a valid ID.

"Twelve Angry Men" has received favorable reviews from critics.

New York Magazine: A classic in the making. Thisfundamentally self-renewing play is more than a lesson in civics and shrewd analysis of a cross-section of psyches. It is a nudge toward our leaving the theater a bit better than we entered it.

Talkin Broadway: As much a blistering character study as an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check. It's also, at its core, deeply patriotic; the belief that the U.S. legal system does work - and, when unimpeded, will do good.

12 Angry Men Play Review | Emily L-S

12 angry men, a play in 2 acts that portrays the complicated and frustrating job of one who is on the jury. 12 angry men is about twelve men in the 1940’s who have all been summoned for jury duty. Their case is of a young boy, 16, who has been accused of brutally murdering his father with a knife on a train. There are few witnesses, but their statements are both well described. They talk about how “they woke up hearing the sound of a man and a younger boy yelling. The boy yelled ‘DIE’ and then there was silence. Then running footsteps down the stairs”. At the begging when they enter the room, they start it off with a vote. 11 for guilty, 1 for not guilty. Now this causes a huge controversy and now that one person needs to explain himself. This causes major frustration throughout the jury. But as his explanation and reasoning continues, more and more members of the jury change their verdict. So now the score is 6 guilty, 6 not guilty. They all take turns in explain themselves until the score is 11 for not guilty and 1 guilty. Now the last man becomes enraged, not wanting to allow the young boy to be set free. As he goes on a rant about how allowing the young boy to be set free, he slips up and reveals to the jury his fear of allowing the young boy to be let go; “He killed his own father! Who’s to say that he won’t kill another person?! My son, my son! He’s only 16! He could come and kill ME! That poor man didn’t deserve to die! And by the hand of his own son?! That boy can’t be set free! He can’t be!” But the first man to say not guilty tells him; “This isn’t your son, this is the life of boy whose life has barley even started. There isn’t enough proof to prove that he killed his father. And this is a life at stake! Can you really take the risk of taking an innocent life because the story sounds against him?” Distraught and in tears, the man settles with not guilty. Bringing the full verdict to not guilty. The boy is set free, the men are sent home, and all is okay and stress-free for the 12 angry men.
