Clairton girl, 17, fatally shot as gun goes off at gathering

Karrie Linnen, 17, was her mother's last hope for a child who would go to college instead of jail. That dream died early Sunday morning when Karrie, who would have begun her senior year at Clairton High School in a few weeks, was shot to death in an apparent accident during a gathering of close friends, with one of whom being charged in the death.

When Karrie, whose three older brothers are in jail, wasn't at school or working at McDonald's, she was nearly always at home with her mother, said Karrie's godsister, Shantelle Moody, 18, of Clairton. Karrie studied hard and planned to go to college next fall.

Later Sunday, Karrie's mother was still in shock at her loss, Ms. Moody said.

"All she kept saying was her three boys were her storms, and Karrie was finally her peace, and now her peace is gone," Ms. Moody said, wiping away tears.

On Saturday night, Karrie was hanging out with four young men in a one-car cinderblock garage behind the home at 624 Park Ave., where one of the boys, Gerron Chaney, 18, lives with his mother. His mother was inside the house, asleep.

The friends were drinking malt liquor, playing cards and listening to music, Mr. Chaney later told Clairton police, and at some point Mr. Chaney pulled out a semiautomatic handgun he had hidden on a shelf in the garage.

Mr. Chaney told police he removed the handgun's clip, pulled back the slide to make sure there were no rounds inside, then passed the gun to one of the other young men. He looked at the gun for a few minutes, then passed it to Karrie, according to a criminal complaint against Mr. Chaney, who stated that "we were passing it around and playing with the gun and looking at it."

Karrie gave the gun back to Mr. Chaney, who inserted the clip back into the gun and "cocked" the slide to the rear, the complaint states.

"He said the next thing he knows the gun went off, striking the victim in the right side of the chest."

Police went to the scene at 1:10 a.m. and Karrie was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The gun was not recovered at the scene, and anyone with information about it is asked to call the Allegheny County homicide unit at 412-473-1300. A reward is being offered.

Mr. Chaney has been charged with homicide and reckless endangerment.

His father, Greg Chaney, said he and the young man's mother have talked to him for years about staying away from guns and out of trouble. But after his son turned 18, he said, he thought he was automatically an adult and began skipping school. He finally dropped out of Clairton High School this spring, just a few months short of graduation.

Ive actually never seen a scene kid without them. You can find them in almost every color and style. You really cant go wrong with whatever skinny jeans you choose. They also aren’t hard to find. Your local clothing stores and mall should carry them.

Converse, vans, and ballet flats are all a good choice of shoe to add to your new outfit. Most of the scene kid population wear jet black shoes. The girls are usually always seen in ballet flats. Ballet flats normally come with cute bows and buckles on them as well which adds more personality to them. You really cant go wrong with the color you choose. Just pick a color you like, a color that expresses you.
